May 03 New Controllers? Nope, Modded Controllers!Recently I purchased some new shells for my controllers and needless to say I am totally pleased with the outcome. Take a look see for yourself.
April 27 Xbox 360 AwesomenessWell, I am actually tired after my last escapade, but I think I still have enough energy to write about the amazing transformation I put my Xbox 360 through at the expense of the warranty ofcoarse. Anyways, I recently decided that I had had enough of the Whiteness vibe the 360 kept giving me, so I did something about it. I headed over to Llamma.com and ordered a bunch of stuff put into the beast including a new case made by XCM that is to be dubbed "The Black Knight". Anyways, I recieved all of my shipment in yesterday and got started immediately. The first thing on the agenda was to rip out the cooling system and replace it with a more efficient fan system made by Talismoon. So I ended up replacing the stock fan with the Talismoon fan, and also ended up swaping out the stock air duct for a clear, LED lit one. Once that was done I started placing the LED strips on the top and bottom of the case to really get some glow out of the top and bottom vents. After wiring everything that needed electricity, I bundled up the wires and prepared to work on the case. The Black Knight case was my first choice because it was the nicest looking black case I could find anywhere. After unwrapping all the parts to the case I took it out the garage and cut out the holes for the fans, glued the plexi-glass insert in and then put the whole thing together, and WALLA! You have one hell of a beast!
Click Here, For Pictures. April 24 "Live Anywhere" Is Upon UsWell, well, I went over to Major Nelson's Web Site, and what do you know? Halo 2 (Windows) shows up in his gamercard. I thought that was pretty cool that not only will your Xbox games show up in there, but now the PC games you play will also have an impact. The only problem with this that I can see is that PC gamers should not be able to play with console users. I mean lets take some time to analyze the scales here. One person has a controller with two analog-sticks and the other has a mouse and keyboard. Any gamer with half a brain could tell you that even a complete newb could beat a seasoned veteran if all the veteran had to work with were the analog-sticks opposed to the mouse and keyboard, but thats a different story for a different time. April 23 Can You Feel It? Feels like... Like AIRLast night, actually the night before last night at this point I was looking into some modifications that could be done to the Xbox 360 to keep that insanely hot Tri-Core cool. Anyways I ran across numerous techniques for increasing suction of the fans, watercooling the thing, wiring the fans to the 12V powersource opposed to the 5V they run on by default, etc. Anyways the most practical involved ramoving the mesh grill from the plastic case and then the metal housing, thus increasing airflow considerably and also gettig rid of some noise as well. The only problem with this was that if you know me, you would know that my stuff not only has to function well, but has to be pleasing to the eye. So I got to thinking and decided that instead of taking all of the mesh away I would just take what was necessary out to allow airflow to increase and also allow a fan grill to securely cover the opening. So after some hours toying around with a dremel and some zip ties believe it or not, I have had what I believe to be a great success. Keep in mind that my black case is coming in that mail still and once it is here I will try to update this post, but I really think the Chrome will go extremly well with it.
April 21 Black HD DVD DriveFinally, I have wanted all of my Xbox Paraphernallia to be black because lets face it; the Xbox was aesthetically pleasing as hell, I mean the thing was a Beast. And while the inside of the 360 is definately a beast, the outside tends to make hardcore gamers wonder if it really is serious or not. Anyways, I have decided to pony up and get what I want by adding a little color if you will to my HD DVD drive, and later my Xbox 360 when all of the parts I ordered come in. I basically just took it apart and painted all of the white plastic black. I have uploaded what seems to me to be a lot of pictures about the assembly, and if you follow them backwards you should be ablet to take it apart on your own although I did seem to skip a couple of the last steps. The only hard part is pulling the top off. You have to pull hard as hell to get it off, but never fear it will eventually come off. As you can see, the results are well worth the blood, sweat and tears, that is if painting makes you cry, or bleed for that matter.
April 16 The Trilogy In HD! Well, Almost...Well, whats new, there is nothing to do after work on Sunday, so today I decided to watch Star Wars: A New Hope because lets face it, I am a nerd. As you all well know every nerd has to renew his/her Star Wars, or Star Trek knowledge every so often, so I dusted off the DVD and popped it into the HD DVD drive for my 360 and what do you know, not HD, but Damn Close. Close enough in fact that my 360 can now vouch that it has seen the entire original Star Wars Trilogy, all in one night. I just finished Return of the Jedi and I think I am going to head off to bed. Oh yea, and I hadn't noticed that Hayden Christensen is in Return of the Jedi when Luke is looking back upon Obi-Wan, Yoda, and his father. Honestly, I thought it was kind of gay, should have kept it original, everyone looks like they did when they died or at least close, and then Aniken is in his fricken twenties. I suppose you could debate as to whether Aniken Skywalker truly died in his twenties though. Anyways, I am about to do a project concerning my xbox that I am super excited about, so more on that soon, for any of you unfortunate enough to actually stumble across this blog, let alone read it. April 10 Reaction To Bungie's Latest VidocWow, as if I couldn't get anymore excited about the Halo 3 Beta. I mean right as I am simmering down from the explosion of rumors that followed the Maintenance that Xbox Live recently went through Bungie has to go and ruin my perfectly in place study habits by forcing nearly half of brain to wonder how certain new elements in the Halo 3 universe will effect other new or old elements, not to mention overall gameplay. Alright the first and biggest improvement, or modification shall we say to prevent this blog from becoming an argument is the feature fans are already calling "Deployments". Now I have not done enough research to confirm that "Deployments" is the actual technical term designated by bungie for these new features, but for the purpose of this blog, thats what we will call them. Anyways, Bungie has confirmed two "Deployment" types and all but promis more are in the works. The current two are the Bubble Shield, which seemed to have an early birth when Master Chief deployed one in what was said to be strictly a cinematic trailer and nothing else. And the second is the Trip Mine, which can used to blow up oncoming vehicles. Both of these new "Deployments" sound amazing, and I personally can't wait to see what other "Deployments" Bungie has come up with to put in the final release of the game. Who knows we may even see some new ones in the Beta. Only time will tell. I am personally very impressed with bubble shield idea and can't wait to explore the possibilities of having a virtual bubble of protection around you and possibly other teammates. One of the other things that really struck me is the look of the levels and players. While they were definately of next gen quality, I have to be a little critical and say that Bungie still has a lot of work to do, but for the most part I am sure its being taken care of. I realized that all of the footage that was shown was from the Alpha build and I also realized that since the Alpha build, bungie has come out and said that an entire coat more of polish has been applied since, and it seems like every week in the weekly update they have more to say about what they added the previous week, so we will definately see about that. Other than that the only other thing that really struck me as a good thing is that they are regressing the starting weapon lineup back to the rifle and maybe some grenades. But either way, I was kind of getting sick of the SMG anyways. April 04 Guitar Hero II, Massively AwesomeAlright, I have to admit when I first heard of this game it sounded like another gimmicky piece of crap. But then I saw Guitar Hero become incredibly popular. And then, Guitar Hero II came along and flew off of the shelves the first week it was there. Now the 360 it seems has taken a does of Rock n' Roll because Guitar Hero II is now available and naturally I went out first thing this morning to go grab myself a copy of the game along with the guitar controller. At first, like everyone I presume, I sucked, I didn't only suck, I sucked so hard I could have easily made a golf ball go right through a garden hose with my suckiness. But then I began to realize that there is a certain rythem to the game, a certain, how do I say it, mood, the user has to be in. At first, I had to be slightly serious to learn the basics, and then I stepped it up and started rockin a little bit and finally I came to a point where the mediums became do-able and the easy songs, were, well, easy. Currently I am working on making through all of the mediums and I have also proudly gotten one of the Expert songs out of the way, WOOT! Anyways, the key for this game is to go through the campagn systematically from easy to expert and you will pick up the necessary skills as you go. Be warned though, your reaction time will only get you so far and you made need practice for the Hard songs, and you will definately need practice for the Expert songs before you attempt them live and make a fool of yourself.
Anyways, I am totally giving this game a 5 Out Of 5, for all around stellar gameplay, solid range of skill requirements for different players, and more re-playability than I can possibly imagine. March 31 Achievements, What Are They, What Do They Do, What Should They Be?Alright, we all know the answer to at least the first question up above. The real subjective reasoning doesn't come until the last two; What Do They Do, and What Should They Be? I think most people can tell you what they do, but what should they be, and how should they be implemented in games takes a little more thought.
First of all, most people if asked "What Do Achievements Do?" will tell you exactly what they do; "Well, they raise your gamerscore." Obviously, but what do they really do, beyond simply giving a gamer increased cajones and confidence when posting in online forums that contain their gamercard. The answer is simple, they add reason to play the game over and over, not to mention in some cases such as King Kong they can boost sales or number of rented copies due to the simplicity of its achievment system (Not that King Kong is a bad game, just one that I can tell some people wouldn't play unless there was an easily obtainable reward.)
Now on to the real meat and potatos of this blog entry. What should achievements be? And even more importantly, how should they be implemented into the games for the 360. First off, I have a very strong opinion that achievements should actually be obtainable to everyone who plays whether it is a 7 year old child who happens to know his brothers passcode, or an 80 year old who just happens to like to game every once in a while. Achievements should not be a measure of how much of a life someone does or doesn't have, it should simply be a measure of how successful they were in a game and the progress they made through it which is for the most part what they currently do, sometimes. Having said that, there are too many "Bullshit" achievements out there that are just not obtainable to the average person who has a job and in many cases is also a full time student, even though they may have made signifigant progress in the game. So I have made a list of "Achievement No, No's" in hopes that developers will start abiding by them. Just as a side note, I am not an achievement whore, but I will admit that when I am in the mood to hunt a few down, I am not afraid to break out the 12 pack of mountain dew and go at it until I have laid claim to what should rightufully be mine. Some achievements are indeed fun to try and get, but like I said before, some are just stupid to even try to get, and incredibly unsatisfactory when they are obtained.
Achievement No, No's
And finally on a last note to the developers, be smart, don't make an achievment that you know no-one is going to get, such as Final Fantasy XI's "Reach Level 75 With Each Character" Achievement that is only worth a measly 30 points. I mean there are two things wrong with that; Its clearly impossible, and only 30 points, I mean what the hell, 30 fricken points, in the time it would take me to get that achievement I could have gotten my gamerscore up to at least 50,000 using other games. G4 Media tested this, and came to the conclusion that after 700 hours of gameplay it was possible to get ONE character up to a level 62, not 75, but just up to 62. Keep in mind that there are 18 character classes. I am going to have to bring out the internet lingo and I usually don't like to do that in my blogs, but seriuosly WTF Dude. I would say the Gears of War 10,000 kill achievement is as far as most gamers are willing to go as far as long term achievments are concerned, but thats almost pushing the envelope. Basically, if you think it may be impossible, maybe you should tone it down a little bit guys. I would also like to mention one other thing that has recently impressed me. In Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 the user is able to track his/her achievments all the way to their current percent of completion. I would love to see this implemented in future games as it does come in handy when on an achievement hunt, although it does ruin the surprise sometimes because instead of knowing that it should come within the hour or so, you can practically count down the kills, but nevertheless, good thinking. March 30 Major Nelson, We Love You!!!Alright, lately the Major has been implying that his blog is being abused. I can honestly say that I don't read the comments, but I can say that unfortunately I have no problem believing that their are indeed haters out there. Whoever is writing these outrageous comments even hinting at a notion that the Major is anything but an amazing person is clearly ill. The Major takes time out of his day to make sure fans know exactly what is going down at the Xbox Headquarters. You don't see sony doing that do you? No, because they are too busy making sure whatever the hell new format they are creating is secretly better than existing formats. He should be thanked and praised for his work. And not only the work that he is paid to do, but the work he does from the goodness of his heart. I mean think about it, he runs an entire website so that Xbox fans can constantly be up to date with what is going on. That is hard work, and he keeps it up to date and fixes it when it needs fixing. I guess what I am trying to say is that if someone builds you a house, you don't go spray painting all over the side of it, NO, you take care of it and if anything help improve upon it. So for those of you that comment on Major Nelson's blog;
GIVE THE GUY SOME LOVE,
If there is new news, you will usually hear it from him first, in depth and accurate.
And Major, if your reading this, I appreciate the work you have done for us.
THANK YOU, MAJOR NELSON! March 29 Halo 3 Beta, Bigger Conspiracy Than Entire Halo Franchise?Fanboys clearly are why the world goes round. At first it is only one who thinks he may have found something, then the theory itself intices more to look into the matter, and soon enough an entire community is dedicating itself to unraveling a mystery. The stories become more believable and the reasoning more sound. The question is; when does one levitate from inquisitive to desperate? because at the point of desperation, few assumptions that are made are ever actually true in the end; just incredibly in depth theories far deeper than the very conspiracy they are meant to explain.
For this reason, I am starting a Case study on the topic of the upcoming release of the Halo 3 Beta. Though my information may not be as precise as a true scientists, I will gather various theories from various online forums and post them here. I may even comment on them depending on how relevant I deem them to be.
Also, I will be adding theories as they are created and I will be updating the blog entry as theories are either proved incorrect, or hopefully sometime soon, proved to be correct.
Theories
1. Halo 3 Beta will be released on the first day of spring. (False)
I can't remember if I ever though this was a possibility. I really doubt I did, because spring is quite a while and for Bungie to be ready so soon is just not realistic, not to mention the article Bungie published said "Spring", that doesn't mean the first day of spring, that means sometime during the spring.
2. Halo 3 Beta will be released on the 27th of March because that is the day they are going to prepare the servers for the massive amount of people that will be downloading the 1GB file. (False)
I know that I did not support this theory. I don't why but this sounded like rubbish to me. I mean if microsoft needed to add bandwidth to their servers I don't think they need to shutdown Live to do it, although I am really not an expert so if I am making an ass of myself please leave a comment in BOLD, UNDERLINED and the LARGEST FONT.
3. Halo 3 Beta will be released either on the night of the 27th of April, or on the 28th of April based on the fact that earlier on the day of the 27th Major Nelson, The Director of Programming for Xbox Live, stated that by the end of the night Microsoft would reveal a surprise. (False)
At the time mayber there was the slightest hope that it would be Halo 3, but something kept telling me that it wasn't.
4. Halo 3 Beta will be released on the 2nd of April, because according to Halo3.com's page information the Beta Information page expires on "Tuesday, April 2, 2007 5:25:45 P.M.. (Pending)
I have noticed that every time confirms this and puts down what their browser is telling them, that the times are different and in most cases further away from April 2nd towards the Future, so I am not real sure about this one.
5. Halo 3 Beta will be released on the 2nd of April, because in the Halo Graphic Novel on page 103, the Master Chief is shown sitting on a case with 4/2/07 carefully drawn on the side. (Pending)
To me this seems logical, Bungie has planted clues to surprises in their games before and it is just descreet enough to be an honest to goodness clue, but who knows. I just hope I havn't fallen into Desperation.
6. Halo 3 Beta will be released the same day which the new Halo 3 12 Month Xbox Live Subscription is released, which is April 20th. (Pending)
Could be, maybe, seems logical enough.
7. Halo 3 Beta will be released on the 30th of March at 3:00PM. Information was gathered through a grapevine of information trailing back to Bungie. (False)
Sounds like either a joke, or someone who has fallen into Desperation mode.
8. Halo 3 Beta will be released on the 1st of April. This theory originated on the Bungie.net forums after several users who had been playing Crackdown and recovered a hidden orb had gotten what seemed to be a cryptograph in the following form; "nIce job agent PeRfect job AgiLity orb 1st12 out of 500". After solving the Cryptograph "APRIL 1st" is formed. (Pending)
Sounds reasonable, however some gamers have reported that even though they had recovered all of the Orbs in Crackdown's Pacific City, they had never encountered such a message as the one above.
Oblivion, The Name Says It AllThe Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Blessing or Curse?(The one game that can turn your life into Oblivion if your not careful.) The Elder Scrolls series hasn't always been a favorite of mine, in fact I didn't even play Morrowind for the Xbox. My Senior year of High-school one of my best friends, Drew (Over there in the friends List>>>), or Andrew as he is really called, got me convinced that this game was a must have when it came out. So naturally, because one of the two of us thought it was worthy of a portion of the tiny amount of funds we had, we both ended up purchasing a copy. I have to say at first it was fun, but like any RPG in the beginning, there was so much to do I honestly didn't know where to start and got bogged down by all of the tasks at hand. Once he had taught me a few RPG techniques I was hooked, I mean, hooked. I loved the game so much that I might as well have worn a T-Shirt that said "I am Martin Septim's Bitch", even though he is just a bunch of polygons and pixels. At the time I had the same computer that I have now, a Dell XPS M170, my Baby, at least, until they came out with the Dual-Core a month later, but thats a different Rant. Anyways the game ran, but it was definately no sprint by an means. So I enjoyed the game but not to its full potential. Recently, I upgraded to Vista, which is cool, but it will be excellent once all my hardware has working drivers. Anyways, I wanted to play Oblivion but I found that with my setup and the lack of fully functional drivers for my Hardware it just wasn't happening. So whats a man to do when his Intel M processor isn't putting out anymore? Thats an easy one ladies and gents; you hit the power button on the 360. Oblivion for the 360 is pretty much the same as the computer version, only you can kill Daedra from the comfort of your couch instead of the desktop chair. I didn't think it would be quite as fun this time around. I was wrong though, there is something about this game that is either incredibly addictive, or incredibly illegal, because the way it sucks the gamer into its immersive plot is simply unreal. In fact, I am going to shut up and start playing. Maybe I'll see you on The Planes of Oblivion, if so, you can address me as Champion of Cyrodill, or Master, whichever you decide is more fitting. |
